SAMBA ON DUNDAS - AUGUST 15 - 1 to 5 PM

1525 DUNDAS WEST

(This year all activities take place at 1525 DUNDAS WEST which is the TCHC BUILDING - just west of Dufferin on the south side. As with other years, the street will remain open to vehicular and TTC traffic. RAIN PLAN: The party moves to Lula Lounge at 1585 Dundas West. Everyone is welcome.)

The Dundas West BIA  is pleased to announce that the 4th annual Samba on Dundas will take place on Sunday, August 15th. The community party will feature live Brazilian music, samba and capoeira performances, kids’ activities and dance lessons.

The past year has been a difficult one for the Dundas West BIA. Loss of parking, interruptions to TTC service and water main construction have presented many challenges to local merchants. Samba on Dundas is a chance for Dundas West BIA members to thank the loyal customers who have continued to shop and do business on Dundas West through these past months. Working in cooperation with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), the BIA has gathered together some of Toronto’s top Brazilian musicians and dancers for an afternoon of family fun.

Weekend specials

Area merchants will also be offering specials to their customers over the course of the weekend and there will more free kids activities on Saturday August 14th from 11am to 1pm at Lula Lounge at 1585 Dundas Street West.

This year the festivities will take place at Teresa’s Place, a green space for the community created in memory of the late Teresa Melo by the Dundas West BIA in collaboration with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC).

Come join us the day before (Saturday, August 14th) for a free family percussion workshop by Bavia Arts and childrens’ crafts. 11 AM to 1 PM at Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas West). The BIA would like to thank Scotiabank for their generous donation towards our childrens’ programming.

BRAZIL DANCE WORLD

Brazil Dance World offers a number of different Brazilian Ballroom dance lessons and performances. They will be conducting offering a beginner dance lesson at Samba on Dundas, to which all are welcome.

LUANDA JONES TRIO

During her decade-long career, Luanda has carried forward the Brazilian musical tradition of singing about personal passion and the love for the natural beauty of Brazil and its people. A vocalist in the tradition of the great Brazilian singers Gal Costa, Elis Regina or Joyce, Luanda’s songs are replete with “Saudade” - the famous Portuguese word that is woven throughout Brazil’s musical fabric - especially that of Bossa Nova.

CAPOEIRA CAMARA

Capoeira (Ca-po-era) is a form of martial art that combines self-defense with music and acrobatics. It was developed in Brazil over 400 years ago. Capoeira Camara was founded by Contra Mestre Bola, who has now been promoting Brazilian culture and Capoeira for 15 years. In this time, his travels have taken him to training sessions and performances in St. Croix and to Capoeira workshops as far away as Russia, as his expertise and leadership have earned him international recognition.

BAQUE DE BAMBA

Among the most recent additions to Toronto’s flourishing Brazilian live music  scene, Baque de Bamba is an ultra-urban Afro-Brazilian drumming troupe performing Maractu, Afoxe, Ciranda and other traditional Brazilian rhythms. Baque de Bamba is led by singer and bandleader Aline Morales. Born in Belo Horizonte Brazil, she has played at several carnivals and opened shows for, among others, Jorge Ben Jor, Manu Chau, Otto, and Mundo Livre S/A.

SAMBA SQUAD

Founded by award-winning percussionist Rick Shadrach Lazar, Samba Squad is an innovative batteria (drum corps) born out of the Brazilian tradition of Batucada and Samba de Carnaval. This joy-instilling percussion posse plus special guest vocalists takes you on a dance-till-you-drop tour of global grooves. Samba Squad shows bust out in energy and excitement; the musical roots of Afro-Brasil, Afro-Cuba, North and West Africa, as well as elements of Urban Funk and Hip-hop, are dropped into a seething cauldron to produce a Vibrant Dance Party.

AFROLUSOPHONE

Created to capture the diversity present in the Lusophone - “Portuguese Speaking” - countries of the world, grupo Afro-Lusophone showcases the energy and magnetism of Brazilian Samba, Cape Verdean Batuku, Funana, and Angolan Kizomba! They specialize in Carnival-style Samba, and have an array of breathtaking costumes and dancers!
